Ferndale’s May 20 council packet moves forward a short-term Vision Zero demonstration project on 5th Street, with staff laying out a temporary traffic-calming plan that would use speed humps, pavement markings and signage on the corridor between Arlington Avenue and A Street.
In the staff report, the city engineer’s design calls for four temporary speed humps at regular intervals along 5th Street, where the posted speed limit is 25 mph. The report says the city would spend $8,971.55 on materials and shipping, and that Ferndale’s $3,000 match would be met through the city engineer’s time for implementation. The same report says the project would run for two weeks.
The packet also says staff explored adding a dedicated bike lane to the demonstration project, and that doing so is technically feasible. But the report says the available grant money is not enough to fund the bike lane as part of the temporary project.
The item appears in the packet as a final pre-implementation council check-in, so the documents show staff recommending the project rather than confirming final council action. The packet does not by itself show whether the council adopted the item at the meeting or when the demo would start.
The full packet is available from the city’s May 20 council agenda and packet.
