The Redding City Council delayed a decision on the future operating structure of the city-owned Motorsports Park on Nov. 3, keeping existing license agreements in place while competing user groups enter talks with city officials.

The council was considering Motor Sports Park RFP No. 5716, including whether to pursue one master lease or two separate leases for racing organizations. Instead, Mayor Mike Littau said he and Vice Mayor Paul Dhanuka would lead an ad hoc process, with city staff participating, to meet with leaders of the groups that use the tracks. The item was expected to return to the council Nov. 17, according to the Nov. 3 council meeting.

The council’s action leaves unresolved how the facility will be managed and how its users will share access and scheduling. During the meeting, speakers differed over the lease structure and cited concerns including safety, insurance, security, scheduling and control of the facility. The council did not resolve those competing positions at the meeting.

Vice Mayor Dhanuka, who was absent, sent a statement supporting equitable treatment of local clubs and favoring two separate leases. The council’s Nov. 17 discussion is expected to determine whether the city moves toward a lease decision or continues negotiations.
