Big Lagoon Union Elementary School District trustees voted 2-0 on Aug. 19 to approve Guzi-West’s AHERA Program Proposal Option 2 for $5,000 after an asbestos survey connected to flood-mitigation work identified asbestos-containing material in an office closet. The approved board minutes show Board President Marjorie Adler and Trustee Brooke Hearon voted yes; Trustee Theresa Murphy Hall was absent.
Superintendent Cathie Shermer told the board that flood mitigation was ongoing in Room 2, the District Office and the office closet. New Life Service Company was performing dehumidification and related work in the affected areas, according to the minutes.
The board discussed anticipated asbestos-related response actions and the need to maintain an updated Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act, or AHERA, asbestos-management plan for the school. The minutes also say carpeting affected by the flood was expected to be replaced in Room 2 and the office closet.
The minutes do not specify the material identified, an abatement or clearance-testing schedule, whether any area was closed or reopened, or the source of funding for the $5,000 program. They document the board’s approval and the status of the mitigation work but do not establish whether anyone was exposed.
