Sutter County supervisors are set to consider creating a new Sheriff Homeless Liaison cost center and adding a 1.0 full-time, limited-term deputy sheriff position for one year, according to the Aug. 25 board agenda packet.

The staff report recommends establishing Sheriff Homeless Liaison (CC2206) within Public Safety Fund 0015, assigning the position from Sept. 1, 2026, through Aug. 30, 2027, and approving a $225,000 budget amendment that would increase appropriations in the new sheriff cost center while reducing appropriations in Elections (CC1502). The item is flagged as a 4/5-vote matter in the packet.

The report says the Sheriff's Office previously assigned a deputy to its Community Response Team, where the role addressed homelessness alongside other community concerns. In that capacity, the report says, the position helped reduce illegal encampments and dumping and connect people with housing, behavioral health and other supportive services, including in the Second Street corridor and the Sutter County River Bottoms.

The packet says the Auditor's Office would establish the new cost center if the board approves the item, and Human Resources would add the limited-term deputy sheriff position to the cost center's allocation schedule. It also states there would be no fiscal impact to the General Fund.
