Shasta County supervisors on June 16 took the first formal step toward two charter-related ordinances that would go before voters.
According to the June 16 draft minutes, the board directed staff to return with an ordinance amending the county charter to limit the use of eminent domain. That motion passed 3-2, with Supervisors Plummer and Long voting no.
In a separate action, supervisors also directed staff to return with an ordinance that would change the charter so the board could appoint someone to fill a vacancy in an elected office by a 4/5 vote. That motion passed 4-1, with Plummer voting no.
The minutes identify the items as charter amendments, but the summary materials do not include the finalized ordinance language or say when the proposals would be placed on a ballot. The board’s June 16 meeting also covered other business, including a county fire report, budget actions and closed-session litigation.
The board’s June 30 meeting summary later referred back to the June 16 charter actions, describing them as proposed amendments concerning eminent domain and vacancies in elected offices.
