A June 24 Assembly hearing turned into a show of force for SB 802, with Sacramento city and county officials, advocates and service providers lining up behind the bill’s regional model for addressing homelessness and housing.
The hearing materials describe SB 802 as a proposal centered on a joint powers authority to coordinate a regional response. Former Mayor Daryl Steinberg was among the names called out in support, along with Sacramento Vice Mayor Creena Talamontes, Mayor Pro Tem Eric Guerra and council members Katie Maple, Lisa Kaplan, Mai Vang and Rick Jennings, according to the committee record. Other supporters identified in the transcript included Josh Pane, Steve Cohn, Aston Schlocker of Sacramento advocates for rail and transit, Scott Ford of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, Jay Martinez of the Sacramento County Newport Association, Lynn Lindsay of the North of Thomas Community Coalition, Joseph Becheco of First Step Communities and Laura O’Connor of Compassionate California.
Sacramento County Deputy County Executive Shavon Gattari told the committee it would be kept updated as the regional model moves forward. The hearing record also says Alicia Deans of Sacramento Act spoke in opposition to the vote.
The committee materials do not show a final vote or any amendments on SB 802, so the hearing itself is the clearest documented development from June 24.
