Rio Dell’s City Council voted 5-0 on June 2 to create an animal care and control ad hoc committee, a step city staff said would help review past practices and future options after changes in the city’s long-term animal care partnership.

Mayor Pro Tem Carter and Mayor Garnes were appointed to the temporary committee, according to the meeting summary and transcript metadata from the council’s June 2 meeting.

The committee action came during the same meeting in which the council also approved its 2026-27 operating and capital budget, but the animal care item was a separate formal vote. The meeting summary says the council established the committee to review what comes next for animal care and control services, though the scope, timeline and any recommendations were not spelled out in the materials reviewed.

City staff told the council that Rio Dell could be eligible for Opportunity Zones 2.0 and would work with regional partners to advocate for inclusion. The city manager also briefed the council on wildfire liability policy changes being discussed at the state level, according to the meeting summary.

Public comment at the meeting included criticism of the E&G&E Water Diversion Project and a request that the tribe be involved in opposing it. Council members also discussed Juneteenth closures, a possible police-vs.-fire softball game on July 10, park cleanup work and regional collaboration noted during a recent Fort Bragg meeting, the summary says.
