Redding has launched a new online e-permit system that lets homeowners and contractors verify whether residential improvement work was properly permitted and inspected before final payment is made.
In a city release, Development Services Director Jeremy Pagan said the portal is meant to help residents protect their investments and avoid problems that can come with unpermitted work. The city says the tool is intended to make it easier to track permits for common projects such as HVAC replacements, water heater installations, roofing and other residential jobs.
Residents can search by property address to review active and historical permits, inspection results, permit numbers and project details, according to the release. The city says the process is designed to help homeowners confirm that work has passed final inspection before paying a contractor.
The release says permits are required by law under the California Building Code, and warns that skipping them can create health and safety risks, void warranties, cause insurance problems and lead to costly repairs. It also cites the California State Contractor’s Licensing Board’s recommendation that homeowners not make final payment until the building department has issued written approval and they are satisfied with the work.
The city directs residents to its permit-check portal at cityofredding.gov/permitcheck.
