The Assembly Judiciary Committee on Aug. 25 advanced SB 957, sending the bill to the Assembly Health Committee.
The measure, known as the Protecting Vulnerable Immigrant Detainees Model Act, would direct the attorney general to develop a comprehensive oversight plan for privately operated civil detention facilities, according to the committee’s hearing materials. The Assembly Judiciary Committee summary says supporters argued the bill responds to prior findings of unsafe and inhumane conditions in private detention centers, including poor food, delayed medical care and deaths.
