The Cutten Elementary School District board is developing an enrollment outreach plan after the employee association warned that projected enrollment decreases could lead to layoffs in future years.
According to the Oct. 12 board meeting minutes, Tracy Benbow, co-president of the Humboldt Bay Teachers Association for the 2026-27 school year, reported that the association was considering future layoffs because of projected enrollment decreases “over the coming years.” The association asked for robust advertising to increase attendance compared with other school districts.
Stacy Gabbert presented a flyer with seven advertising ideas aimed at increasing enrollment and publicizing the district. Trustee Mindy Sehon asked what the district would need to provide to carry out the ideas, and Board President Becky Reece said she was developing an action plan for how they would be implemented.
The district’s student registration report listed enrollment as unchanged from the prior month. The minutes do not state the district’s current enrollment, the size or timing of the projected decline, positions that could be affected or a timeline and cost for the advertising plan.
The meeting record documents planning and a warning about possible future layoffs, not an announcement that layoffs are imminent.
