Sutter County is loosening its rules for truck yards in industrial zones after the Board of Supervisors approved a zoning code text amendment on May 12, according to staff reporting at the May 20 Planning Commission meeting.
Director of Development Services Neal Hay told commissioners that truck yards in the M1 and M2 zones will no longer require a use permit, reversing the county’s post-2019 approach and returning to the earlier standard. Hay also said the county wants the change to encourage development along state route corridors, the meeting summary says.
The policy shift affects how truck-yard proposals can move forward in industrial areas, replacing a discretionary entitlement process with a simpler path in the zones covered by the amendment. Truck yards can bring traffic, noise and freight activity, making the county’s zoning rules an important factor for future projects.
The Planning Commission discussion came up during staff updates at the regular May 20 meeting, whose agenda packet also covered other planning items.
The available Planning Commission materials do not include the Board of Supervisors agenda item, ordinance text, vote count or effective date, so those details could not be confirmed from the records reviewed.
