The Shasta County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 on Sept. 29 to retroactively approve the County Administrative Office’s recommendation of census tract 127.01 in eastern Shasta County for possible designation under California’s Opportunity Zones 2.0 program, according to the board meeting record.\n\nThe county administrative office submitted the recommendation to California GO-Biz on July 17, after the state moved the submission deadline from July 25 to July 20, according to the county staff report. The Sept. 29 agenda asked the board to approve that submission after the fact and receive a presentation from Rebecca Baer, president of the Shasta County Economic Development Corporation.\n\nCounty staff and the Economic Development Corporation selected the tract based on existing commercial development and potential projects involving manufacturing, tourism and outdoor recreation, and working lands and waters, the report said. The county said missing the revised deadline would have excluded eligible Shasta County tracts from consideration.\n\nIf California nominates the tract and federal authorities certify it, qualifying private investments could become eligible for federal tax incentives associated with Opportunity Zone designations. The county report said the action would have no additional General Fund impact, with associated costs covered in the County Administrative Office’s fiscal year 2026-27 budget.\n\nThe board’s vote resolves the county’s retroactive-approval step, but it does not establish that the tract has been selected by California or certified by federal authorities. The available county record does not quantify anticipated investment or tax expenditures.
