The Redding City Council gave first-reading approval Monday to a temporary entertainment zone on Hilltop Drive for the April 24 Cool April Nights cruise.

According to the council meeting transcript, the zone will run along Hilltop between Cypress and Highway 44 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The city said the only direct cost expected so far is signage, estimated at under $5,000, to be covered through the Public Works budget.

The ordinance would temporarily expand the city’s open-container framework beyond downtown for the event. Supporters told council the zone could help manage alcohol use already happening during the cruise and improve safety. The council approved the measure unanimously on first reading.

The available record does not show when a second reading or final adoption will occur.
