The Assembly on June 11 adopted House Resolution 118, formally welcoming the 2026 FIFA World Cup to California after 64 coauthors were added.
The resolution passed by voice vote on the floor. During debate, members cited California’s role as a host state for 14 matches, along with training sites in Irvine and Alameda and host-city activity in San Francisco and Santa Clara.
Supporters also pointed to a public watch party planned in San Jose and said the tournament could bring cultural and economic benefits to the state. The resolution itself was symbolic and did not commit the state to funding or other implementation steps.
HR 118 was one of several ceremonial and policy resolutions taken up during the June 11 session, which also included measures on women farmers and a sister-state relationship with Gauteng Province in South Africa.
