The Assembly Insurance Committee advanced two wildfire-related insurance bills on June 17 after hearing testimony from survivors and consumer advocates who said some insurers delayed claims, redlined estimates or later revised payments after the Eaton and Palisades fires.
Sen. Sasha Perez’s SB 877 would require insurers to document and disclose claim materials, including loss assessments and revisions, to policyholders, according to the committee hearing on June 17. SB 878, also authored by Perez, would add a 10% interest penalty for delayed claim payments or coverage decisions, the hearing record shows.
Supporters tied the bills to post-disaster claims handling problems. Speakers described delayed or revised insurance estimates after the Eaton and Palisades fires and said policyholders needed clearer access to the materials insurers used to make claim decisions. Consumer advocates and wildfire survivors testified in favor during the hearing.
The committee moved both bills forward, according to the hearing record. The available material does not show the final floor schedule or a complete roll call for every measure considered that day.
